Rocketry, Robots & Radio: College for Kids at Ivy Tech
June
22, 2005
BLOOMINGTON, IN
–
Kids between the ages of 11 and 14 years old have migrated to Ivy Tech – Bloomington this summer during its annual College for Kids program. College for Kids, a joint venture between Ivy Tech and the YMCA, combines classroom opportunities for students in the morning with activities at the YMCA in the afternoon. Courses/activities take place over a period from June 13 through July 1st, and students choose among a variety of unique educational experiences each week.
Courses for the 2005 College for Kids program include opportunities for students to learn about model rocketry, creating robots, cartooning, crime solving, radio broadcast, and many others (a complete listing is attached). Courses combine information and practical experience and often conclude with a class demonstration. Last week students in the “You’re on the Radio” course conducted a live broadcast at Ivy Tech, and this week students in the model rocketry course will build and launch their own model rockets.
John Whikehart, Ivy Tech Community College – Bloomington Chancellor, says the idea for College for Kids was the brainchild of one of the College’s regional trustees. “Judge Frank Nardi, our Regional Board Trustee from Owen County, wanted to provide middle-school students with an enjoyable summer educational experience that would encourage them to think about attending College after graduation from high school. The program has grown each year and we are proud to partner with the YMCA to meet the needs of our community.”
College for Kids continues through July 1st.
