Ivy Tech Board Gives Approval for Human Services Degree

August 16, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, IN – The Ivy Tech Community College Board of Trustees recently gave approval to Ivy Tech-Bloomington to offer an Associate of Science degree in Human Services. The proposal will now go to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education for final approval. Ivy Tech officials hope to be able to offer the new degree program during the spring 2006 semester.

The Human Services degree program will prepare students for employment in community centers, group homes, substance abuse centers and nursing homes. The Human Services degree is just one of a number of new programs that Ivy Tech-Bloomington has added to its inventory over the last few years. Degrees in Radiation Therapy, Respiratory Care, Biotechnology and Paralegal have recently been approved by the Commission.

John Whikehart, Ivy Tech Community College – Bloomington Chancellor, says that the addition of the Human Services program augments Ivy Tech’s expanding health sciences initiative. “Human services professionals reach out to individuals, families and communities. This program will provide students with the broad understanding they need to help others meet their psychological, social and environmental needs.”

The two-year Associate of Science Degree will require the successful completion of 62 credit hours. The degree is designed for transfer opportunities, and will transfer to a four-year degree at Indiana State University, Ball State University and the University of Southern Indiana.

Prospective students interested in this program should contact Ivy Tech at (812) 330-6350.
