Ivy Tech Hosts Fair for International Students

October 19, 2005

Bloomington, Indiana.  Plan now to attend “Cultural Connections – Our Global Community,” a special event to celebrate Ivy Tech’s international diversity.  The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 20 from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm in Alumni Hall at the Ivy Tech campus.  The purpose of this event is to introduce Ivy Tech’s international faculty, staff and students, local businesses, and community members to each other and expose students to the diversity that surrounds them.  The public is invited to join Ivy Tech as it opens its window on the world.

The special event features a mural display exploring “Cultures from Around the World” as well as information and food booths.  All festival visitors will be given passports that they can then get stamped to travel among the informative and entertaining exhibitions about various cultures that will be presented by student groups and community members.

John Whikehart, Ivy Tech Community College – Bloomington Chancellor, said, “This event is a very unique teaching and learning opportunity for our campus.  It allows our growing international student population to act as our teachers regarding their cultures, while creating an “outside the classroom” learning opportunity for the rest of our student body.  As our students attain the academic skills and credentials so critically important to a global workforce and economy, this event broadens their educational experience.”

Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the event.  Global Groove, a dynamic, interactive world music group, featuring Adam Long, Bil Whitefeather, Dale Langdon and Eddie Brantmeier will perform from 11:15 am-12 pm.   The group uses world instruments from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, North America, South America and Australia.  Global Groove’s education program, “Music that Talks,” combines various instruments such as the Egyptian table, the Native American flute, Australian Aboriginal didjeridu, steel drums from the Caribbean and other percussion instruments.  Steve Sobiech will play a wide variety of solo guitar instrumentals, including Brazilian, Celtic, South African, Jazz, Pop and Classical from 12 pm-1 pm. Steve also performs on the Chapman Stick, a unique 12-stringed instrument. Issac Salazar, from Posoltega, Nicaragua, will perform traditional Nicaraguan folksongs from 1 pm-2 pm. Salazar has played guitar since he was five years old.  His father is also a respected guitarist in Posoltega.

Participating organizations include the Asian Cultural Center (IU), Council on Community and Accessibility, GLBT Indiana (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Association, IU), Ivy Tech Cultural Awareness Club, Ivy Tech Ecology Club, Inter Asian and Uralic National Resource Center (IU),  La Casa (Latino Cultural Center, IU), Latin American and Caribbean Studies (IU), Leo R.
