Ivy Tech-Bloomington Summer Enrollment Up

August 9, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, IN – Officials at Ivy Tech Community College–Bloomington today announced a substantial increase in summer enrollment for 2005. 1,532 students enrolled for the 2005 summer semester, a record for the growing campus, as of the campus’s count date. The previous high for headcount in a summer term was 1,370 students.

John Whikehart, Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington Chancellor, says there are several reasons for the increase in enrollment. “Last year we took a great deal of time to examine our summer term and decided that we needed to give students more options. This year we offered students several new schedule options, including a 10 week, 8 week, and two 5 week terms. Courses were offered in the classroom, through distance education, and in new “hybrid” offerings that combined distance and classroom instruction. In addition, we focused our recruitment efforts on high school students who were graduating this summer and wanted to get a head start on their college education.”

Due to an aggressive recruitment strategy, 304 new high school students took classes this summer at Ivy Tech. The high number of recent graduates reflects a change in the summer schedule to avoid overlap of the start of the core summer session and a targeted effort to recruit students at regional high schools.

Registration for the fall semester is currently underway at Ivy Tech – Bloomington. Prospective students should contact the Office of Enrollment Services at 1-866-447-0700 Ext. 6350 if they are interested in beginning courses in the fall. Fall classes at Ivy Tech begin August 22nd.
