Ivy Tech enrollment booming; more classroom space leased

Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington will move into additional leased space at 1907 Liberty Drive to accommodate double-digit enrollment growth, school officials announced this week.

Ivy Tech leased 8,500 square feet in the Liberty Drive building last fall, and will increase the space to a total of 25,000 square feet for the fall 2008 semester.

The new space provides 12 additional classrooms, two commons areas, and seven offices for faculty and staff. Rural transit will continue to provide transportation, linking Ivy Tech’s main building at Daniels Way with the Liberty drive location, an Ivy Tech news release stated.

Chancellor John Whikehart said double-digit growth each semester for the last four years prompted the further expansion of classroom space.

This is the third time the Bloomington campus has added leased space. In addition to the main building at Daniels Way and the expanded space at Liberty Drive, Ivy Tech has also leased space downtown for its workforce development and continuing education programs. Also, more than 500 students attend Ivy Tech courses at the Community Learning Center of Lawrence County in Bedford, and as space permits in additional locations in Owen, Morgan, and Martin counties, according to the news release.
