Public Helps Ivy Tech - Bloomington
Select Issues for 2008 O'Bannon Institute
Bloomington, Ind. – The O’Bannon Institute for Community Service, Ivy Tech - Bloomington’s Center for Civic Engagement initiative focusing on service learning, volunteerism and institutional community involvement, will be held this year on April 24th and April 25th. National Issues, Local Impact will be this year’s theme, with the Institute’s discussions concentrating on the upcoming election for President of the United States.
During the 2008 Institute panelists will focus on issues being currently discussed by the major Presidential candidates. Over the last few months, the college solicited assistance from the public, its faculty and staff, and students to select key issues facing the candidates for President that will also have an impact on our local community. Votes for the top three issues were received through electronic and paper ballots, and the top three issues selected for discussion were healthcare, the environment, and education.
John Whikehart, Ivy Tech Community College – Bloomington Chancellor, said that this year’s Institute is special because it comes in the midst of a heated Presidential election. “As we have observed throughout this year’s primary election cycle, the public is more energized and engaged in the political process than in recent years. The O’Bannon Institute will give our community the opportunity to talk about important issues such as healthcare, the environment, and education in the context of how those issues will affect us here in Indiana. Coming less than two weeks before the Indiana Primary, the Institute will provide an important forum for all those who are planning to vote on May 6th.”
The O’Bannon Institute for Community Service, launched in 2004 by Ivy Tech - Bloomington, is an opportunity for the community to come together to discuss issues related to non-profits, education and political service. This 5th Institute will feature national, state, and local experts on community service and political engagement. The College will announce its headliners for the 2008 Institute in the next few weeks.
