November 15, 2003 'Fresh Start' a valuable pairing A partnership between Ivy Tech Community College and the Bloomington Housing Authority's Resident Council could open doors to success for a dozen people. Access to higher education couldn't be made easier. The "Fresh Start to College" program will offer an introductory Ivy Tech class at the Crestmont Community Building. The $300 cost of the course will be paid by the college through scholarships. Transportation to Ivy Tech's west-side campus won't be necessary. The venture will introduce Ivy Tech and its opportunity for higher education to residents of Crestmont, which is a lower-income area. During the two-month course, Crestmont residents will learn computer and study skills and be exposed to community and library resources, learning strategies, financial management and other topics. Kevin White, Crestmont's resident council president, and John Whikehart, Ivy Tech chancellor, should be commended for putting together this creative and potentially life-changing outreach program. Education is a key component to improving economic well-being and overall quality of life. Providing easy access to quality education can only be a positive move. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. We encourage people to take advantage of this opportunity.
