December 3, 2009

Bloomington, Ind. Department Chair of Health Sciences Kay Leach and Ivy Tech-Bloomington Chancellor John Whikehart will preside over the 86th Nurse Pinning Ceremony for 20 graduates of the Practical Nursing program on December 4, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Ivy Tech Student Commons.

Ivy Tech State Trustee Lee Marchant will make a scholarship announcement during the ceremony.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. James LaFollette.

In her role as student speaker, practical nursing graduate, Anna Weigand, will talk about her journey as a student of patient care.

The Practical Nursing program at Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington is a one-year, intensive course of study leading to a technical certificate, and the program prepares the student to take the state licensure exam to become a licensed practical nurse.

Ivy Tech-Bloomington’s Practical Nursing program was developed in 1966 through the cooperative efforts of Bloomington Hospital, the public school system, and a grant from the Federal Government. Sponsorship was transferred to Ivy Tech State College in 1968. During this time, the Practical Nursing program has graduated 2,230 students who typically fill nursing and allied health positions in Monroe and surrounding counties.

The Ivy Tech Practical Nursing program is accredited by the Indiana State Board of Nursing and the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission.

Ivy Tech Community College is the state’s largest public post-secondary institution and one of the nation’s largest singly-accredited statewide community college systems with more than 120,000 students enrolled annually.  Ivy Tech has campuses throughout Indiana.  It serves as the state's engine of workforce development, offering affordable degree programs and training that are aligned with the needs of its community along with courses and programs that transfer to other colleges and universities in Indiana.  It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association.
