Ivy Tech gets grant to help student volunteers pay for college

Bloomington, Ind. – Ivy Tech’s Bloomington campus has received an Indiana Campus Compact (ICC) grant to host a Service Engagement Corps (S-E Corps) AmeriCorps program for the 2010-11 academic year.

Ivy Tech’s Center for Civic Engagement will pair five students with a selected nonprofit agency in the Bloomington area. Students will perform an average of 9 hours of work per week. Once the two semesters of service have been completed, AmeriCorps will award students $1100 to help pay for college or to apply toward student loans.

Chelsea Rood-Emmick, Ivy Tech Director of Civic Engagement, says that this grant will help Ivy Tech place students into nonprofit agencies in Bloomington and surrounding communities. “Ivy Tech has already secured two volunteer spots at the Boys and Girls Club of Ellettsville and one at Area 10 Agency on Aging,” said Rood-Emmick. “This is going to allow Ivy Tech students to earn money to pay for college, for a service they may already be providing. We are thrilled this grant will allow Ivy Tech to provide a monetary bonus to even a few students for volunteerism.”

ICCs S-E Corps program is an AmeriCorps Education Only program that will engage 150 Indiana college student volunteers in AmeriCorps service each year.
